Basically, four quality characteristics determine the value of a colorless diamond, the famous four Cs:
Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat
The most important criterion is the cut of a diamond. Only a cut with ideal proportions gives a diamond its full brilliance. The experience of the cutter who shapes a rough diamond into a work of art is the most important factor here. An excellent cut brings out the fire of a diamond in the best possible way: the incoming light is reflected from one facet to another and reflected back through the surface of the stone. This creates the legendary fire of a diamond.
During the formation of natural diamonds, other components besides carbon can be embedded in the diamond. Diamonds can achieve a unique brilliance like no other gemstone. It is considered flawless if it shows no internal or external inclusions under 10x magnification. Depending on the quantity and size of the inclusions, they can hinder the complete reflection of light and thus limit the fire and value of the diamond.
The third criterion for evaluating diamonds is the color. The color is indicated with letters from D to Z. D stands for the highest color level (colorless) and Z for the deepest with a clear yellow tint. Diamonds from D to H are referred to as "white diamonds". From color level I, the stones have an increasingly yellowish tone.
Fancy color diamonds have colors outside of D to Z and come in all shades - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, brown, grey and even black. These colored diamonds are among the most sought-after specimens in the international diamond trade and promise great potential as an investment.
Diamonds are measured in carats as a unit of weight. One carat (abbreviation ct) corresponds to 0.2 grams. The number of carats is usually given to two decimal places.
As a two-carat stone is significantly rarer than a one-carat stone, it has an exponentially higher value. However, this value is only given if it also fulfills the other quality criteria. However, as the probability of inclusions increases with increasing size, these stones are even rarer.
In order to make the quality of diamonds traceable, certificates were introduced at the beginning of the 20th century. In these certificates, independent, recognized institutions confirm the authenticity of the stone in question.
This certificate also contains details of the four C's and other detailed information. This information is also stored in a database at the issuing institute and can therefore be checked at any time.
